American Cockroach

American Cockroaches

American Cockroaches can be found in commercial buildings like restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and food processing units. They prefer to eat fermenting foods and will move to your kitchen and bathroom first in search of resources. They will eat rotting vegetation, dry food crumbs, and food that has been left uncovered.

What do American cockroaches look like?

Size: Up to 2 in.
Color: Reddish brown.
Body Structure: Oblong-oval body with antennae and a yellow band behind the head.

The females lay an egg case, containing around 12 to 16 eggs, and then transport it on their abdomens before placing it close to a food source. After about 60 days, the eggs hatch, but it requires a year for the nymphs to mature into adults. Over their lifespan, females can lay between 15 and 90 egg cases.

While American cockroaches remain active year-round, they are more prevalent in the spring and summer.

In outdoor environments, American cockroaches tend to favor shaded and humid areas like beneath mulch piles, in decaying trees and woodpiles, and within sewer systems and drains.

Indoors, these roaches are frequently encountered in damp and musty spaces such as basements, crawl spaces, and boiler rooms. They are also commonly sighted near water pipes, as well as in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

American cockroaches are omnivorous creatures that have a broad diet, consuming a wide array of items ranging from insects, leather, book bindings, cosmetics, glue, and wallpaper paste to soap and human food, among other things.

These roaches pose a threat beyond their repulsiveness, as they are carriers of thirty-three bacterial varieties, six types of parasitic worms, and human pathogens. As they traverse decaying food and sewage, they collect bacteria and pathogens on their legs. Individuals with asthma may experience allergic responses to American roaches. Given their capacity to disseminate over 33 bacteria strains, six parasitic worm species, and various human pathogens, American cockroaches should be regarded as a health hazard.

These creatures possess considerable size, making their rapid movement towards shadows evident when lights are switched on. They additionally leave discernible excrement in their hiding places, featuring ridges that might resemble mouse feces. Even in the absence of adult roaches, egg capsules are often observable, typically close to food sources. A distinctive musty pheromone emitted by these insects can sometimes be detected, alerting individuals to a roach infestation. Despite their natural habitat being outdoors, American cockroaches might encroach upon residences due to climate fluctuations or diminished outdoor food availability.

American roaches are notorious for surviving many situations, and can even live for days without their heads. Having a clean, well-sealed home is the best way to prevent roach infestations.

Locating roaches is the first step towards getting rid of them. You can use glue traps in dark areas of your property to see where they hide and catch them. Bait is also good for controlling them by placing in areas of known infestation. Hiring a pest control service company is an effective way to get rid of roaches and other pests. They have the equipment and chemicals to quickly control roaches for good.
