Wood Cockroaches

Wood Cockroaches

Wood cockroaches are not the same as cockroaches in your home. While common roaches in the home include Wood and American cockroaches, wood roaches generally stay in outdoor habitats. In addition, they’re smaller than other common cockroach species.

Wood Cockroaches

What do Wood Cockroaches look like?

Size: Up to 1 1/4 inch.
Color: Brown to reddish-brown
Body Structure: Oval-shaped body. Females have small wing pads yet are flightless; adult males have fully-developed wings that cover their entire bodies.

In a lifetime, females of this species can produce 30 egg capsules, each containing up to 32 eggs. Eggs hatch approximately one month after being laid and maturation can take up to 9 months. Unlike other species, wood roaches are not likely to flee when approached.

They’re not indoor roaches, but they may also find their way into homes through open windows or doors.

Wood cockroaches primarily reside outdoors, including in woodpiles, under debris, or under piles of leaves as well as rotted logs, tree stumps, hollow trees, and under loose bark of dead trees. They rarely make their way indoors.

Wood roaches feed on decaying organic matter, including dead or rotting wood.

Unlike American cockroaches and German roaches, wood cockroaches are harmless. They do not spread disease and will not damage houses or belongings.

Wood cockroaches are an outdoor species but may wander inside by accident. For example, male wood roaches are attracted to light, so there’s the possibility they could fly through an open door or window.

If you’ve discovered cockroaches in your home, it is best to contact a licensed pest control company for help. While wood roaches are more of a nuisance than anything else, there is a possibility you have a different type of roach infesting.

To prevent wood cockroaches from infesting your property, consider implementing these tips:

• Clear plant debris from around your property
• Remove rotting or dead wood, including tree stumps and logs
• Haul away brush piles
• Move wood piles several feet away from the structure
• Keep exterior lights off at night or swap white halogen/fluorescent bulbs to yellow bug lights
• Eliminate standing water
• Close doors and windows when not in use
